Kenny Dunkan regularly draws on the visual culture of the Caribbean, and more specifically on that of carnivals—spaces where social, cultural, and political roles are temporarily overturned—to develop a body of work that questions the legacy of French colonialism and the persistence of its representational modes. Using his own Black body as a starting point, he stages it through a wide range of media including video, performance, sculpture, and assemblage.
